These recipes are not intended to make dog food look like human food, although fresh food can be sourced from the same places as the family's diet, and the preparation methods may overlap. It is recognized that cooking is not part of a truly natural diet for a dog, but is acceptable.
Organic food is recommended, in order to minimize the potential introduction of chemicals into the dog's diet. If the dog is ill, organic food becomes even more important in support of the dog's healing efforts.
Achieving balance in your dog's diet:
Dietary balance is not achieved in each meal, whether for humans or our dogs; it comes from offering a variety of wholesome and species-suitable foods over a period of weeks and months. The body is then able to achieve dietary balance for itself. Offering your dog a wide range of fresh, wholesome, and species-suitable foods is the best route to a balanced diet. Offering just one type of food is likely to set up imbalances for which the body cannot compensate.
Supplements can be selected in order to compensate for perceived weaknesses in the range of foods offered.
Getting started:
Portions can be judged according to your experience with a particular dog. A medium¬ sized dog will usually easily manage 1-2 lb. of fresh meat in a day, along with vegetables and oils. Your dog may not object if you wish to share some of these recipes.
Meat, herb, and bone sausage:
This is suitable for a dog that may not be able to manage chunks of raw meat or whole bones.
* A portion of fresh lamb or beef, minced
* Half of that weight of fresh bone, finely ground or minced (no splinters)
* A good sprinkling of kelp
* A good sprinkling of dried herbs (Herbes de Provence or mixed herbs).
Roll this mixture into a sausage shape and put it down for the dog along with some boiled fresh vegetables moistened with olive oil.
This dish is not cooked and should not be kept for long.
Suitable vegetables and herbs:
* Suitable vegetables for dogs include: celery, sweet potato, spinach, broccoli, carrots (must be organic), parsnips, watercress, various seaweeds (sea vegetables), and nettles, but others are also satisfactory.
* Good culinary herbs include: parsley, oregano, thyme, sage, fenugreek, garlic, turmeric, and coriander.
Wholesome stew:
This recipe can be combined with dumplings.
* Meat chunks (beef or lamb, without trimming off the fat or gristle).
* Carrots, celery, or broccoli, finely chopped.
* Turnip, rutabaga, or parsnip, chopped.
* Shallots (whole).
* Kelp.
* Parsley, minced or finely chopped.
